This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day! (w00t!)

We don't have to fight to get the Dude to read (thankfully). In fact, he's working his way through the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series at the moment and is looking forward to the Harry Potter series sometime soon. However, his absolute favourite is the Amulet series of graphic novels; poor kid is anxiously awaiting book 5 and doesn't understand why he has to wait a year between volumes :)

Meantime, we can reward his reading enthusiasm with a trip to the comic book store this Saturday for Free Comic Book Day. Coincidentally, this fabulous day falls during the week of his birthday so we included it in the celebrations last year. Nothing like taking a trip to a comic book store to start off birthday weekend, eh? {insert Dude head explosion here}

So FCBD, as it's referred to on the official site, is as simple a concept as any: go to the comic book store, get a free comic book. WIN! The goal? "This event celebrates the independent comic book specialty shops, thousands of which exist in North America alone." We're lucky enough that comic book stores have withstood the Internetization of everything else, so why not celebrate their mere existence once a year? I'm in!

And while you're there, why not support the shop by picking up some comics? We visited one last year that had a great used graphic novel/ comic book section spanning all age groups. The Dude managed to find a few great age-appropriate reads, while I perused all the lovely geek paraphernalia.
