Saturday, Oct. 5: Star Wars READS Day! (Even in Ottawa!)

Star Wars Reads Day
Yes, this is a real thing: Reading + Star Wars = Star Wars Reads Day

This Saturday, October 5th, book stores and publishers across North America will be promoting the love of reading along with the best story of all time (ok, debatable for some): Star Wars!!! Book stores will be running events, including a select number of Chapters Indigo stores across Canada. In Ottawa, the Rideau Centre and Kanata Chapters stores will be hosting events starting at 3pm, including photo ops with characters from the movies (c/o the 501st Legion), themed activities and of course, Star Wars books.

According to Carol Roeder, Director of Publishing at Lucasfilm:
"Reading and Star Wars have gone hand-in-hand since 1976, when the novelization of the original Star Wars movie was released. Over the years, many fans have discovered the joy in reading through Star Wars books, and we hope to continue encouraging more people to read."
[Aside: Sure, this is basically a way for publishers to promote purchasing books and merchandise, but frankly I'm a fan of whatever gets kids reading: comic books, graphic novels or big giant books with no pics. Don't care as long as they're reading. And hey, it brings people out to book stores in the process. So, win.]

Now, if your schedule doesn't permit heading out to the events or if there is none near you, but you want to host a Star Wars Reads day of your own, there's an activity kit you can download. It features recipes, crafts, colouring pages and games. Of course, you can always check out some of the source books where these ideas likely came from including the Star Wars craft book and cook books (Wookie Cookies and Wookie Pies) as well.

And of course, you can always go check out the Star Wars: Identities exhibit which is in Ottawa until mid-month. (Check out my review for more details.)

We can't wait for this one! I think we might need to dress up our little Jedi for the occasion; in fact this will be the perfect test run for the Dude's Anakin Hallowe'en costume :) See you there!
